Merino wool provides excellent insulation and the brushed inside creates air pockets which improves the insulation capacities of the fabric. In addition to that the wool is moisture-wicking which means that it draws perspiration away from the skin, so these trousers keep you dry even when working up a sweat during outdoor activities.
